best live show of 2008 so far: Sufjan Stevens. I cannot even describe how special it was, except that it combined the "performer so talented they don't need anything but their voice" gig experience with the "humorous banter and anecdotes" and "giant band, amazing visuals and costumes and beautiful girls and light-up hulahooping" live shows. unfortunately there were a lot of christians there but the show, although it included a fair bit of seven swans, wasn't at all preachy, just beautiful. he played so much from illinois - every track i wanted except decatur and casimir pulaski day (but i'm glad because people were screaming for it). someone presented him with a cake during the encore, come on feel the illinois live was one of the highlights of my life, and he's so goddamn pretty. did i mention i was 2 people from the stage right in front of him? omg.

after work on friday night i went to andrew's bar for a delightful cocktail made of lychees and blueberries with lovely people, followed by a geisha (a french martini with cointreau and lime instead of vodka) at 1 degree, then a dirty burger at 2am before wayne drove me home. what a nice way to finish a work night. the next morning shannon called me up and we joined katie and pete for breakfast at the powerhouse markets. katie brought her ex's daughter and we took her to the playground and the kiosk for ice cream - how wholesome! i got home at the same time as glartin, wayne and mandrew who'd been to yo mama, and we decided to get olives and dips and beers etc and go to the park near the story bridge. i walked to my parents afterwards for afternoon tea and picked some stuff up for allie's party, then headed out to wynnum. we got dressed up in indian clothes, put on bollywood music and cooked amazing food, then sat around talked about movies and scary internet memes. ro offered to pick me up with her bossy GPS, karen, which was a lifesaver, and only cost me petrol money.

mum and dad and i took gran out to lunch at beccofino on sunday, which was awesome and i drank prosecco with the meal - bug meat linguine with cherry tomatos, garlic and chilli. they dropped me off at work where my left ankle got suddenly painful and swollen and by close i could hardly walk. bonnie gave me nurofen which took hours to work but it hasn't hurt since although it's still not quite back to its normal size.

i was expecting a phone call about a potential awesome new job on monday, so i spent the day watching gilmore girls and veronica mars in sweltering heat and didn't get the call. that night we all went to cyber city 2002 for dinner and pool (i won the first game against little matt after a phone call made me angry and i sunk 4 balls in a row!) and then convinced wayne to drive us to milton bowl, collecting tim and wayne's housemates on the way. i sucked and my arm hurt until i discovered the light balls ("suitable for children") and won the second game with a 110 score. excellent times.

after work on tuesday we went to mandrew's bar again for gilloyd's return from canadia, and i had a gin and blueberry cocktail, and a lavender creme brulee. the next day i waited again for the phone call, this time running tonnes of errands - the house fridge has a new seal, anthony picked his fridge up, i paid the electricity bill, bought toilet paper and a pair of tongs and put a bulb in the david lynch lamp, then finally got the call at 5pm. it went pretty well i hope and i'll see on tuesday when i go meet them and find out what the job involves and whether i can have it. matt came over and glartin cooked delicious burritos for us all.

yesterday was 3 movies, 1 day - first coffee and breakfast at espresso garage, then CLOVERFIELD in the imax which fucking rocked, then beer and chips at the plough (i still owe people money for that), then JUNO in a sold-out cinema where we got talking to all these strangers about wayne's Team Margaret shirt and how we met them, which was pretty damn good. Then we got a rushed early dinner (despite sugar overload) at Cyber City and raced to the Palace for LUST, CAUTION which turned out to be a sold-out special screening, which meant no freebies, expensive tickets and some people missed out because i didn't know we'd need to get there early. still we didn't miss the film and it was pretty good. then we went to rics for food and drinks, then there was awesomeness.

whew, up to date.

[music |bjork - mouth's cradle]

i went to girl talk at the zoo on jan 3rd, and despite freezing rainy tired conditions, i danced, although not on the stage like many people i know. props to tim for driving us there and back. there was much discussion of new year's eve, but luckily noone seems to remember much more than i do. the next night i missed out on tickets to buck 65 (i worked all day and didn't try that hard) but in the interests of doing something on a friday night i went with julian and brooke for sushi, and then went to see I Are Legend. without my discount card it was SO expensive, plus they have stupid allocated seating, and it was terrible. the only thing that was worth it was the trailers for cloverfield and the dark knight.

the next day brooke and i went into town and met allie at borders for a brief shop ( got harvey birdman, and investigated the cheap tigers at hype but they didn't have my size), then we met shannon and katie at burger urge (glen, martin and wayne were late and arrived after we'd left) for massive lunch before work. the following day, again before work, we went to aurora on what was glannon's last day of their lease for a final swim/spa/sauna. it was stiflingly hot all morning but just as we arrived a huge storm broke, and we went swimming in really heavy rain, then got in the spa which was like a warm bath with a cold shower running on full. it was really beautiful and surreal. i had a sauna by myself, then we got cakes at aromas for lunch.

shannon came over the next night with antipasto for dinner - enough to feed all of us. we ate on the living room floor, and resolved to get rid of the gross carpet the next day, and gorged ourselves on deleicious food and rice paper rolls brooke made. then we walked up to the gelati shop which was full and understaffed. the next day shannon and brooke and i went into town to buy a carpet (one of those kids ones with roads on it) to replace the gross one, and then all got massages at temomin. i got the japanese boy! on the way home we passed through the valley and spent a bit of time in the indian supermarket (getting 5 curries for $10) and best friends, where the elephant vending machine no longer talks, but they have whitening soap and a brand of pads called "those days". then brooke suggested looking at tigers at the brother sister sale - i didn't even know they had them! they had the ones i wanted in the right size so i bought them, even though they were only 10% off (hype had 20%). they're beautiful, and since the starting price was less than the other styles, i got them for $107 which is not bad. that night glen and martin cooked a delicious curry for the rest of us and wayne, and cleaned up everything, and i realised what an asset they are to the house (along with the new carpet of course). i'd been a little worried that with the wet weather it would always be cramped and messy and noisy in our place but it wasn't.

last tuesday - met shannon in town to buy things to wear to daft punk, then met wayne, mandrew and brooke at chouquette for facestry. found out that if you go late enough they have savoury stuff, but it's more expensive that bon choix. then went to work where we were screening interstella 5555 - i hung out with elle, we played loud daft punk, i stuffed myself with free sandwiches and watched half the movie on my break, it was totes awes.

wednesday - allie stayed at our place the night before to get some space from her famille, which we all need to do sometimes, so we went xmas shopping in the city and i managed to get everything i needed - a moleskine rome guidebook and mark ronson's version album for mum, and a folio voucher to go with dad's Huts 2008 calendar. can't remember what i did that night.

thursday - was daft punk day. i packed various bags for the week and then headed over to shannon's after his haircut for a carton of beer with julian and brooke. then we dressed up in silver and headed down to the gardens past people who yelled "robot rock" out of their cars. i'd written all the daft hands words on my hands but they came off before we even got there. we arrived halfway through the presets, and met up with michaela, james etc, then wayne, and concentrated on getting a good spot in front of the mixing desk and to the left. it wasn't too crowded, and right before daft punk started they played LCD's "daft punk is playing at my house". then everyone crammed forward. the set was exactly like the live album, except with the most awesome visuals ever - at first just text on the big LED background for Technologic, then the pyramid lit up, gradually becoming more complex with colours and shapes until by the end (Human After All) there were images of nature and faces all over it in beautiful colour. we knew when our favourite songs were going to happen so even though i'd lost shannon, when face to face started i heard "nina!!!!" from behind me and looked up to see him gesticulating wildly. when one more time came on everyone was jumping and it was hard not to. even though i was surrounded by sweaty shirtless guys with their hands (or cameras, so many cameras) in front of my face i just felt so happy. robot masks got passed around the crowd and we put them on. brooke's car-reflector skirt came off and was used to fan a guy who was lying on the ground. i sweated so much under my armbands and i hardly even sweat in the sauna. the best parts were when they blew kisses and made triangles with their hands before going offstage, and when their new costumes lit up like Tron in the encore, and then all the lights went off at the end and they turned to reveal "daft punk" on the backs of their jackets, glowing! afterwards we waved furiously to mandrew at work and went to shannon's and then to rics for a few gin and tonics.

fri - met everyone ever for pastry outside chouquette because it was too crowded to sit inside, and saw this woman who had the exact same haircut and clothes and glasses as my mum - creepy. then went back to shannons for a sauna, swim and spa, and showered there. then wayne and martin and i went shopping for cocktail shakers for mandrew, picked up brooke and went to coorparoo to get groceries to take to straddie. we spent $150 on booze at dan murphy's (tanqueray, bacardi, vodka, 3 bottles of wine and 2 sixpacks of beer, plus we took brooke's bombay and mandrew's chambord, and came home with nothing lol) and wayne dropped me at work and picked me up afterwards. he stayed at ours after having indian food and watching shirley in criminal intent and oz.

next entry... best weekend ever.
